The base town is called Box Elder with the town of New Underwood nearby. There is the Rapid City School District and the Douglas School District. The Douglas School district services Box Elder EAFB area It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a fairly good sized school by South Dakota standards, but unfortunately for them they are the smallest school playing sports in the largest school bracket.

Only a few miles away is Rapid City, the second largest city in South Dakota the population is only about 70,000.

Families that are stationed there felt that Ellsworth AFB was very much family oriented. Lots of things to do during the 4 seasons. Rapid City is at the edge of the Black Hills, a prime family vacation area. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s very picturesque. June is a great time to arrive. Summers are warm but comfortable, winters are harsh but keep out ?¢‚ǨÀúriff raff?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢. Just because it gets cold and snowy in the winter doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t mean there?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s nothing to do. There is some great skiing in the northern Black Hills and you can find awesome snowmobile trails. Oh and then of course all the other winter sports like snow shoeing, ice climbing and more.

Personally, I like how one person put it: ?¢‚Ǩ?ìThis is cowboy country. Get to know some ranchers. Ride some horses. Take in a rodeo.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

For single service members as well as for folks that like night life and big city life, this duty station will disappoint, there isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t much of that in the Rapid City area like some large major city, sorry.

Pine Tree Inn has room The 28th Services Squadron would like to remind Ellsworth?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Airmen that if they have family visiting from out of town, rooms at the Pine Tree Inn can be reserved three days in advance for a space-available reservation. For more information call the inn at (605) 385-3956.

Ellsworth?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Family Child Care licensed caregivers To contact caregivers or for more information call the Family Child Care Office at (605) 385-4270.

Calling visitors onto the base Several procedures involving installation entry have changed. All visitors requesting entry onto the installation will be subject to a wants and warrants background check through the National Crime Information Center. The telephone call-in procedures have also been changed. Currently, the Visitor Control Center will not allow telephone call-ins.

Pet Owners: Ensure that privately owned animals arriving at Ellsworth Air Force Base are registered at the Veterinary Treatment Facility within 10 days of arrival. Registration must be performed annually thereafter (aquarium fish, small caged rodents, small caged amphibians and reptiles, and caged birds are exempt from registration) by providing proof of current vaccination. All dogs and cats registered after 1 January 2000 will receive or must have a permanent microchip electronic identification implant. The Veterinary Treatment Facility will provide this service at cost plus a marginal administrative fee. Registration will also consist of providing proof of current rabies vaccination and other required vaccinations

Hey! My fiance and I are just wondering what the base has to offer, what the area is like around the base, and what are some decent apartments off base, (but near base). Thanks!!
